- Ouzoud, 150 km north-east
The Ouzoud waterfalls drop about 110 metres in several tiers into a red-rock gorge in the Middle Atlas. They are the highest falls in North Africa and, after rain in spring, one of the most impressive natural sights within reach of Marrakech.
The drive takes around two and a half to three hours through olive groves and Berber villages. At Ouzoud a local guide leads you down a path lined with fig and olive trees, where Barbary macaques live wild, to the viewpoints and the pools at the bottom.
At the base you can take a short ride on a small wooden boat close to the spray, swim in summer, and have lunch on a terrace facing the falls before the walk back up and the drive home.

Frequently asked questions
How far are the Ouzoud waterfalls from Marrakech?
About 150 km, or 2.5–3 hours each way by road.
When is the best time to visit Ouzoud?
March to May, when the water flow is strongest after winter rain. In late summer the falls are smaller but you can swim.
Can you see monkeys at Ouzoud?
Yes. Barbary macaques live around the falls. Do not feed them; it harms their health.
Is the walk at Ouzoud difficult?
It is moderate, with steps and steep paths. Allow about 30 minutes down and 45 minutes back up at a relaxed pace.
