Is Marrakech Safe? Practical Advice for Visitors

Marrakech is visited by millions of people every year, and most trips go smoothly. The main annoyances are touts and small scams in the medina. Knowing them in advance makes them easy to avoid.

Overall

Violent crime against visitors is rare. Like any busy city, pickpocketing happens in crowded places, and some people in the medina make a living by steering tourists towards shops for a commission. Check your government’s travel advice before you go (UK FCDO or US State Department), as it is updated regularly.

Common scams in the medina

  • “The road is closed”: someone says the way ahead is shut and offers to guide you, usually to a shop or tannery. Keep walking or check your map.
  • Unofficial guides: friendly young men offer directions and then ask for money. A polite “la, shukran” (no, thank you) is enough.
  • Henna: women in Jemaa el-Fnaa may start drawing on your hand and then ask for a high price. Keep your hands to yourself unless you agree a price first.
  • Animal photos: snake charmers and monkey handlers charge for photos. Animal welfare groups advise avoiding them.
  • Tannery visits: free “tours” end in a leather shop with high prices.

Taxis

Small beige petit taxis are cheap but drivers often refuse the meter. Agree the price before you get in, or ask your riad what a fair fare is. For the airport and day trips, a pre-booked transfer avoids the discussion entirely. See our airport transfer prices.

At night

Jemaa el-Fnaa and the main streets stay busy until late and feel safe. Narrow medina alleys can be dark and confusing after 10 pm; ask your riad to send someone to meet you, or take a taxi to the nearest gate.

Women and solo travellers

Many women travel to Marrakech alone. Expect comments and attention in the souks, which is tiring but rarely threatening. Dressing modestly (shoulders and knees covered) reduces it, as does walking with purpose and not engaging with persistent sellers. Organised day trips are an easy way to see the countryside without the hassle.

Simple habits that help

  • Carry a copy of your passport and keep the original in the hotel safe.
  • Use a cross-body bag in crowds.
  • Agree every price before a service starts: taxis, henna, guides, photos.
  • Book tours and transfers with clear prices in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marrakech safe for tourists right now?

Marrakech is generally considered safe for visitors, but conditions change. Check the latest UK FCDO or US State Department travel advice before you travel.

Is Marrakech safe for solo female travellers?

Yes, many women travel there alone. Expect verbal attention in the medina; modest clothing and a confident, polite "no thank you" help.

Is it safe to walk in the Marrakech medina at night?

The main squares and streets are busy and safe in the evening. Small alleys late at night are best avoided; ask your riad to meet you.

Are taxis in Marrakech safe?

Yes, but agree the fare before the ride. Pre-booked transfers are easiest for the airport.
